What our patient’s say…
“I was training for my first marathon when I started getting problems in my knee. I had seen a physio, but he just kept treating the knee without any improvements. Then I found Bob Griffiths, he explained why I hadn’t been getting any better, gave me an exercise to improve my glute muscles and some orthotics to stop the arches of my feel collapsing. The pain was gone within 2 weeks. I completed the marathon in under 4 hours and owe it all to his incredible skill and effort”. Harriot, Finance Officer and Marathon Runner
Runner’s knee is a common term to describe pain at the front of the knee during activity. It can affect anyone, but it frequently seen in endurance athletes.
Mild to moderate pain at the front of the knee. Usually a dull ache or sharp catching/grinding pain which worsens with activity, such as, running, squatting, jumping, using the stairs (especially going down stairs) or sitting with bent knees.
The pain is normally generated by the kneecap rubbing excessively against the knee joint, creating friction, inflammation and then pain. This can be due to a number of reasons, e.g. your thigh muscles (quadriceps) may be tight and pulling the kneecap out of position.
Runner’s knee can be diagnosed following a full case history and physical exam. We will also video you running so that we can assess the knee in a real life situation. It is only necessary to use MRI scans or x-rays we suspect an underlying complication or fracture is present.
Early treatment for runner’s knee can reduce the severity of your condition. At Pro Performance Clinics, we treat the cause and the symptoms of your runner’s knee simultaneously.
1. We relax your tight and painful thigh muscles using Active Release Technique(TM), Neuro Muscular Re-education(TM), medical acupuncture and myofascial stretching.
2. We mobilise your painful knee joint to restore normal function and relieve stiffness.
3. We strengthen the weak thigh muscles surrounding the joint.
4. We correct the underlying cause of the pain; lower limb muscle imbalances, over pronating feet, poor training habits, a leg length difference, misaligned pelvis etc.
Your runner’s knee pain is very different to everyone else’s, so your treatment plan will be uniquely tailored to suit your individual condition.
We make preventing runner’s knee simple. We guide you through an easy to follow stretching and strengthening program that corrects muscle imbalances. Through video analysis we adjust any faulty running technique or footwear problems, returning you to training stronger than before.
